Contrary to how fun and easy moving into a new house in a new city is portrayed, the process can be nerve-wracking, if you’re moving to an unfamiliar city with little preparation. Worry not, because we have a list of relocation tips to make your life easier, and your move, better:
1. Leave it to the professionals
We cannot stress this enough – hire a professional service to carefully pack and move all your items, reducing your moving stress by half. Movers are good with organization, they have all the right tools and equipment, and they can move bulky items easily. Furlenco’s free relocation service lets you move all your furniture for free, once a year.
2. Rely on mutual friends
If it so happens that you don’t know much about the new city you’re moving to, ask your friends and their friends who live there or know other people who do, to give you a quick gist of what you’re going to be in for. Keep in touch with these contacts who can probably help you settle in after you move.
3. Keep a lookout for the community
Make sure you are aware of where the nearest grocery store, hardware store, chemist and ATM are, in your new neighbourhood. Check for local shopping areas nearby, places of worship, recreational venues and movie theatres, to ensure that you move to a place that accommodates most of your needs.
4. Pack essentials at the end
While packing, work backwards. Pack the items you won’t be needing immediately, first. Save all the essentials like your clothes, grooming tools and medical kits towards the end, as you would have just finished packing them and will remember exactly where they are.
5. Take it slow
Once you’ve gone through with the moving process and arrived at your new house, take a breather. Unbox your items one box at a time, and arrange rooms one at a time. Setting up the whole house at once can be daunting, and can get you down.
1. Hoard your stuff
Get rid of any belongings which you don’t see yourself taking with you – have a garage sale or giveaway things to your friends as a keepsake. The lesser you take to a new city, the better; because you’ll always be able to buy or rent things that you need later.
2. Make any large purchases
Which brings us to our next tip – do not buy anything until you absolutely need it for the new house. That bed you’ve been eyeing might be on sale, but transporting it all the way can be a hassle, just to find out that it eats up a lot of bedroom space in your new house. Hold off on purchases until you’re absolutely convinced about the new house and what it needs.
3. Leave out your family and children
Your family – children and pets included, are making this big transition with you, and it would only be fair that you include them in the process, packing what they need and considering schools and parks for them in the new city.
Don’t go overboard and make yourself anxious during planning, but don’t be very laid back either. Find the right balance to ensure that your move is seamless.
Stepping out of your comfort zone and leaving behind familiar people and places can be stressful. Don’t let that stress make you miss out on this new opportunity and try to make a list of all the things you’re looking forward to in the new city.
